CHAPTER ONE

The East wind.

Istočni vetar.

Cherry Tree Lane is a nice London street.

Cherry Tree Lane je lepa londonska ulica.

On one side there are houses, on the other there is a park.

S jedne strane su kuće, a s druge je park.

The cherry-trees go dancing right in the middle.

Trešnje plešu tačno po sredini.

Number Seventeen is the smallest house in the street.

Broj Sedamnaest je najmanja kuća u ulici.

The Banks live in this house.

U toj kući žive porodica Banks.

They are six - Mr. and Mrs. Banks and their four children - Jane, Michael and the twins - Barbara and John.

Ima ih šestoro – gospodin i gospođa Banks i njihovo četvoro dece – Džejn, Majkl i blizanci – Barbara i Džon.

Mrs. Banks has a lot of housework and she has a nurse to help her with the children.

Gospođa Banks ima mnogo posla u kući i ima dadilju da joj pomaže sa decom.

But one day their nurse left them and Mrs. Banks didn't know what to do.

Ali jednog dana dadilja ih je napustila i gospođa Banks nije znala šta da radi.

"Write to the newspaper," said Mr. Banks, "and the nurses will come.

„Napiši u novine,“ rekao je gospodin Banks, „i dadilje će doći.“

I'm sorry, but now I must go to work."

„Žao mi je, ali sada moram na posao.“

He kissed his wife on her nose and went away to the City.

Poljubio je ženu u nos i otišao u Siti.

The City was a place where Mr. Banks went every day.

Siti je bio mesto gde je gospodin Banks išao svaki dan.

There he sat at a large desk and made money.

Tamo je sedeo za velikim stolom i zarađivao novac.

He was very busy with it.

Bio je veoma zauzet time.

And he brought some money home in his little black bag.

I donosio je nešto novca kući u svojoj maloj crnoj torbi.

Sometimes he gave some to Jane and Michael, but sometimes he didn't and said: "The Bank is broken."

Ponekad bi dao nešto Džejn i Majklu, ali ponekad ne bi i rekao: „Banka je prazna.“

When Mr. Banks went to work, Mrs. Banks began to write letters to the newspapers.

Kada je gospodin Banks otišao na posao, gospođa Banks je počela da piše pisma novinama.

Upstairs in the Nursery, Jane and Michael were waiting for their father.

Gore u dečjoj sobi, Džejn i Majkl čekali su svog oca.

It was a windy evening and the East Wind was blowing through the cherry-trees.

Bilo je vetrovito veče i istočni vetar duvao je kroz trešnje.

"Look! The trees are dancing!" cried Jane.

„Pogledaj! Drveće pleše!“ povikala je Džejn.

"That's Daddy over there!" said Michael.

„Tamo je tata!“ rekao je Majkl.

"That's not Daddy," she said. "It's somebody else."

„To nije tata,“ rekla je ona. „To je neko drugi.“

It was a woman with her hat on and a bag in her right hand.

To je bila žena sa šeširom na glavi i torbom u desnoj ruci.

Suddenly a strange thing happened.

Odjednom se desilo nešto čudno.

The wind lifted her up and brought her to the garden door.

Vetar ju je podigao i doneo do vrtnog kapije.

When the woman opened it, the wind lifted her up again and carried her at the front door.

Kada je žena otvorila, vetar ju je ponovo podigao i odneo do ulaznih vrata.

"Let's go and see who it is!" said Jane.

„Hajde da vidimo ko je to!“ rekla je Džejn.

They left their room to have a look at a visitor.

Napustili su svoju sobu da pogledaju posetioca.

Jane and Michael could see that she was thin and had black hair and blue eyes.

Džejn i Majkl su videli da je mršava, crne kose i plavih očiju.

"They are very nice and very quiet children," said Mrs. Banks but in fact she didn't believe it.

„Oni su veoma dobra i mirna deca,“ rekla je gospođa Banks, ali zapravo u to nije verovala.

The 'Nursery' was upstairs and the woman followed Mrs. Banks but she slid up the banisters!

Dečja soba je bila na spratu, a žena je pošla za gospođom Banks, ali se popela uz gelender!

Down, of course, the children often did it themselves. But up - never!

Niz, naravno, deca su često silazila sama. Ali uz – nikada!

"Well, children," said Mrs. Banks. "This is your new nurse, Mary Poppins!"

„Dakle, deco,“ rekla je gospođa Banks. „Ovo je vaša nova dadilja, Meri Popins!“

Mary Poppins looked at them carefully.

Meri Popins ih je pažljivo pogledala.

At last the woman gave a long loud sniff and said: "All right. I'll stay."

Na kraju je žena duboko i glasno šmrknula i rekla: „U redu. Ostaću.“

When Mrs. Banks left the Nursery, Jane and Michael came up to Mary Poppins.

Kada je gospođa Banks izašla iz dečje sobe, Džejn i Majkl su prišli Meri Popins.

"How did you come?" Jane asked. "Did the wind blow you here?"

„Kako ste došli?“pitala je Džejn. „Da li vas je vetar doneo ovde?“

"It did," said Mary Poppins and no more.

„Jeste,“ rekla je Meri Popins i ništa više.

And she gave another sniff and opened her bag.

I ponovo je šmrknula i otvorila svoju torbu.

"What a funny bag!" Michael said.

„Kakva smešna torba!“ rekao je Majkl.

There was nothing inside.

U njoj nije bilo ničega.

But the next moment Mary Poppins took out a white apron, a large cake of soap, a tooth-brush, a packet of hairpins, a bottle of perfume and a small armchair.

Ali već sledećeg trenutka Meri Popins izvadila je belu kecelju, veliku ploču sapuna, četkicu za zube, pakovanje šnala, bočicu parfema i malu fotelju.

Jane and Michael were shocked.

Džejn i Majkl su bili zaprepašćeni.

Then Mary Poppins took out a large bottle of medicine.

Zatim je Meri Popins izvadila veliku bocu leka.

"Is that your medicine?" asked Michael.

„Da li je to vaš lek?“ pitao je Majkl.

"No, it's yours," said Mary Poppins.

„Ne, to je tvoj,“ rekla je Meri Popins.

"I don't want it! I won't!"

„Neću! Ne želim!“

But suddenly Michael understood that he could not say "no" to her.

Ali odjednom je Majkl shvatio da ne može da joj kaže „ne“.

He closed his eyes and opened his mouth.

Zatvorio je oči i otvorio usta.

"Strawberry ice," he said. "More, more, more!"

„Sladoled od jagode,“ rekao je. „Još, još, još!“

But Mary Poppins, with her cold eyes, came up to Jane.

Ali Meri Popins, sa svojim hladnim očima, prišla je Džejn.

Her spoon was full of something green and yellow.

Njena kašika bila je puna nečega zelenog i žutog.

"Sweet lemon-juice. I love it," Jane said.

„Sladak limunov sok. Volim ga,“ rekla je Džejn.

But when Mary Poppins came to the twins with the bottle, she cried.

Ali kada je Meri Popins prišla blizancima sa bocom, ona je povikala.

"Oh no! It's not good for them. Please!"

„Oh ne! To nije dobro za njih. Molim vas!“

But Mary Poppins didn't look at her.

Ali Meri Popins je nije ni pogledala.

She brought the spoon to John's mouth.

Pružila je kašiku Džonu do usta.

He drank it and Jane saw there was milk in the spoon!

On je popio, a Džejn je videla da je u kašici bilo mleko!

Then Mary Poppins opened her bag and took out eleven pyjamas, a pair of boots, a set of dominoes, two bathing-caps and a book.

Zatim je Meri Popins otvorila svoju torbu i izvadila jedanaest pidžama, par čizama, set domina, dve kape za kupanje i knjigu.

Then came a bed.

Zatim je izvadila i krevet.

Jane and Michael were very surprised.

Džejn i Majkl su bili veoma iznenađeni.

Now they knew that something strange and wonderful happened at their house.

Sada su znali da se u njihovoj kući desilo nešto čudno i divno.

"Mary Poppins," said Michael, "will you never leave us?"

„Meri Popins,“ rekao je Majkl, „zar nas nikada nećete napustiti?“

"Till the wind changes," she said and went to bed.

„Dok se vetar ne promeni,“ rekla je i otišla u krevet.
