Christmas shopping

Božićna kupovina

It was Christmas time and Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael were going to the Largest Shop to do their Christmas shopping.

Bilo je vreme Božića i Meri Popins, Džejn i Majkl su išli u Najveću Prodavnicu da obave božićnu kupovinu.

Shop windows were full of toys and books and plum cakes.

Izlozi su bili puni igračaka, knjiga i kolača od šljiva.

"Look, airplanes!" said Michael.

„Pogledaj, avioni!“ reče Majkl.

"Two little black babies - are they chocolate?" asked Jane.

„Dve male crne bebe — da li su od čokolade?“ upita Džejn.

"Now we will go in," Mary Poppins said to Jane and Michael.

„Sada ćemo ući“, reče Meri Popins Džejn i Majklu.

It wasn't easy to choose the presents for all the family.

Nije bilo lako izabrati poklone za celu porodicu.

"That will be for Daddy," said Michael and took a toy train with special signals.

"I will take care of it for him when he goes to the City."

"I think I will get this for Mother," said Jane and took a small doll's pram, which her Mother always wanted.

"Perhaps she will give it to me sometimes."

After that, Michael chose a packet of hairpins for the Twins and a Meccano set for his Mother.

Jane bought 'Robinson Crusoe' for the Twins to read when they grew up.

Behind them the dolls on the Christmas tree were saying, "Take me home, somebody!" and the airplanes were all trying to fly, "Let me fly! Ah, do let me fly!"

Jane and Michael hurried away, closing their ears to those voices.

The time in the Toy Department was very short.

Vreme u odeljenju za igračke bilo je vrlo kratko.

And when they were going to open the shop door, they saw a running girl.

A kada su hteli da otvore vrata prodavnice, ugledali su devojčicu koja trči.

"Look!" said Jane and Michael both together.

„Pogledaj!“ rekoše Džejn i Majkl u isti mah.

"Oh dear!" said Mary Poppins surprisingly.

„O, bože!“ reče Meri Popins iznenađeno.

The girl had few clothes on.

Devojčica je bila slabo obučena.

Suddenly she stopped and looked around.

Odjednom je stala i osvrnula se.

The girl was looking for someone.

Devojčica je tražila nekoga.

Then she saw Jane, Michael and Mary Poppins.

Tada je ugledala Džejn, Majkla i Meri Popins.

"Ah, there you are! Thank you for waiting. I'm afraid I'm a little late. Aren't you glad to see me?"

„Ah, eto vas! Hvala što ste sačekali. Plašim se da malo kasnim. Zar vam nije drago što me vidite?“

"Yes," said Jane smiling, "but who are you?"

„Jeste“, reče Džejn s osmehom, „ali ko si ti?“

"Who am I? Don't say you don't know me?"

„Ko sam ja? Nemoj reći da me ne poznaješ?“

The child looked very surprised and then she turned to Mary Poppins.

Dete je izgledalo veoma iznenađeno, pa se okrenulo ka Meri Popins.

"She knows me. Don't you? I'm sure you know me!"

„Ona me zna. Zar ne? Sigurna sam da me poznaješ!“

There was a curious look on Mary Poppins' face: "Does it begin with an M?"

Na licu Meri Popins pojavi se radoznao izraz: „Počinje li na M?“

"Of course it does. I'm Maia. I'm the second of the Pleiades. Electra - she's the eldest - couldn't come because she's looking after Merope, the baby. Oh, Jane! Oh, Michael! I've often watched you from the sky, and now I'm actually talking to you. There is nothing about you I don't know.

„Naravno da počinje. Ja sam Maja. Druga sam od Plejada. Elektra — ona je najstarija — nije mogla doći jer čuva Meropu, bebu. O, Džejn! O, Majkle! Često sam vas posmatrala s neba, a sada zaista razgovaram s vama. Nema ničega o vama što ne znam.

"Michael doesn't like to brush his hair. And your Father has got thin hair on the top. I like him. It was he who first introduced us - don't you remember? He said one evening last summer: 'Look, there are the Pleiades. Seven stars all together, the smallest in the sky. But there is one of them you can't see.' He meant Merope, of course. She's still too young to stay up all night. She's such a baby that she has to go to bed very early. Some of them up there call us the Little Sisters."

„Majkl ne voli da češlja kosu. A vaš otac ima retku kosu na temenu. Sviđa mi se. On nas je prvi upoznao — zar se ne sećate? Jedne večeri prošlog leta rekao je: ‘Gledajte, to su Plejade. Sedam zvezda zajedno, najmanjih na nebu. Ali jednu od njih ne možete videti.’ Mislio je, naravno, na Meropu. Još je suviše mala da bude budna celu noć. Toliko je beba da mora vrlo rano u krevet. Neki nas gore zovu Male Sestre.“

"But what are you doing here?" asked Michael, still very surprised.

„Ali šta radiš ovde?“ upita Majkl, još uvek veoma iznenađen.

"I've come down to buy toys for them all. We can't get away very often, you know. We're so busy making the spring rains. Can you help me?" she said and took the children back to the Toy Department.

As they went, the people stood and looked at them and dropped their bags.

"Just look at her. She is so cold. What are her parents thinking of?"

But Jane, Michael, Mary Poppins and Maia were very busy with shopping and didn't look around.

"Here we are!" said Maia. "What shall we buy? I want something for each of my sisters - six of them.

First - my eldest sister. She's very domestic. What about that nice broom? We have so many troubles with star-dust.

Now for Taygete. She likes dancing. Don't you think, Jane, a skipping-rope would be just the thing for her.

Then there's Alcyone. She's so quiet. Does she want anything? A book, do you think, Mary Poppins? I hope she would like that nice little book. And if she doesn't, she can look at the pictures.

I know what Celaeno wants. A hoop. She will like morning exercises with it up there, in the sky. She'll love that red and blue one.

Znam šta Kelajno želi. Obruč. Svideo bi joj se jutarnji trening s njim tamo gore, na nebu. Obožavaće onaj crveno-plavi.

Now there are only the two little sisters left. Michael, what would you advise for Sterope?"

Sada su ostale samo dve mlađe sestre. Majkle, šta bi savetovao za Steropu?“

"What about a top?" said Michael.

„Šta kažeš na čigru?“ reče Majkl.

"What a good idea! She will love to watch it turning round and round in the sky. And what do you think for Merope, the baby, Jane?"

„Kakva dobra ideja! Obožavaće da gleda kako se vrti i vrti na nebu. A šta misliš za Meropu, bebu, Džejn?“

"John and Barbara," said Jane, "have rubber ducks!"

"Oh, Jane, how clever you are! A rubber duck for Merope, please - a blue one with yellow eyes."

Then Michael turned and said to Mary Poppins.

"What did you say?" asked Maia with round, surprised eyes. "Nobody will pay. There is nothing to pay - is there?"

"Nothing at all, madam," the shop assistant said and gave her the bag full of toys.

„Ništa uopšte, gospođo“, reče prodavac i dade joj torbu punu igračaka.

"Now we must go," she went on, taking Michael's arm. "We must all go home. It's very late, and I heard your Mother telling you that you must be home in time for tea. Besides, I must get back, too. Come."

„Sada moramo poći“, nastavi ona, uhvativši Majkla pod ruku. „Svi moramo kući. Veoma je kasno, i čula sam vašu mamu kako vam kaže da morate stići na čaj. Osim toga, i ja moram nazad. Hajde.“

And she led the way through the shop and out.

I povede ih kroz prodavnicu napolje.

Outside the shop Jane suddenly said, "But there's no present for her. She's bought something for all the others and nothing for herself. Maia has no Christmas present."

Ispred prodavnice Džejn iznenada reče: „Ali nema poklona za nju. Kupila je svima drugima, a sebi ništa. Maja nema božićni poklon.“

Mary Poppins gave a quick look into the shop window.

Meri Popins hitro pogleda u izlog.

She saw herself, very nicely dressed, with her hat and her new gloves on.

Ugledala je sebe, vrlo lepo obučenu, sa šeširom i novim rukavicama.

Then she took off her new gloves and put them on to Maia's hands.

Zatim je skinula svoje nove rukavice i navukla ih Maji na ruke.

"There!" she said. "It's cold today."

„Eto!“ reče. „Hladno je danas.“

Maia looked at the gloves. They were too big for her little hands.

Maja pogleda rukavice. Bile su prevelike za njene male ruke.

She said nothing, but came up to Mary Poppins and kissed her.

Ništa ne reče, već priđe Meri Popins i poljubi je.

"I've been so happy," said Maia. "Don't forget me, will you?"

„Bila sam tako srećna“, reče Maja. „Nemojte me zaboraviti, hoćete li?“

The children shook their heads.

Deca odoše glavom.

"Good-bye," said Maia. She stood on tiptoe, lifted up her arms and jumped into the air.

„Doviđenja“, reče Maja. Stala je na prste, podigla ruke i skočila u vazduh.

She began to walk the air up and up, climbing higher and higher.

Počela je da korača vazduhom sve više i više, penjući se sve više.

You could think there were stairs in the grey sky.

Moglo se pomisliti da na sivom nebu postoje stepenice.

"What on earth is happening?" somebody asked.

„Šta se, zaboga, dešava?“ upita neko.

"But it's not possible!" said another voice.

„Ali to nije moguće!“ reče drugi glas.

A lot of people were standing with their heads up and looking at the girl in the sky.

Mnogo ljudi je stajalo zabačenih glava i gledalo devojčicu na nebu.

Suddenly they heard the voice of the Policeman.

Odjednom su čuli glas policajca.

"What is this? What is going on here?"

„Šta je ovo? Šta se ovde dešava?“

He looked up and called angrily:

Pogleda nagore i ljutito povika:

"There! Come down! What are you doing up there? Come down! We can't have the girl walking through the air. It's not natural!"

„Hej ti! Siđi dole! Šta radiš tamo gore? Siđi! Ne možemo dozvoliti da devojčica hoda vazduhom. To nije prirodno!“

But Maia was going up and up.

Ali Maja je išla sve više i više.

Then a cloud hid her but they knew she was behind it.

Tada ju je sakrio oblak, ali su znali da je iza njega.

The bright light was coming through the dark cloud.

Svetla svetlost probijala je kroz tamni oblak.

When Jane, Michael and Mary Poppins came home and the children told their story to their Mother, she said:

Kad su Džejn, Majkl i Meri Popins došli kući i deca ispričala priču svojoj majci, ona reče:

"Perhaps...You know, at Christmas time strange things happen."

„Možda… Znate, u vreme Božića dešavaju se čudne stvari.“

"But what about Mary Poppins' gloves?" said Jane. "We saw her give the gloves to Maia. And she's not wearing them now!"

„Ali šta je s rukavicama Meri Popins?“ reče Džejn. „Videle smo kako ih je dala Maji. A sada ih ne nosi!“

"What, Mary Poppins!" said Mrs. Banks. "Your best gloves! You gave them away!"

„Kako, Meri Popins!“ reče gospođa Benks. „Tvoje najbolje rukavice! Poklonili ste ih!“

Mary Poppins said in her usual cold voice:

Meri Popins reče svojim uobičajeno hladnim glasom:

"My gloves are my gloves and I do with them what I like!"

„Moje rukavice su moje rukavice i radim s njima šta ja hoću!“

CHAPTER TWELVE

DVANAESTO POGLAVLJE

The West wind

Zapadni vetar

It was the first day of spring.

Bio je prvi dan proleća.

Jane and Michael knew it at once, because they heard Mr. Banks singing in the bathroom, and there was only one day in the year when he did that.

Džejn i Majkl su to odmah znali, jer su čuli gospodina Benksa kako peva u kupatilu, a to je radio samo jedan dan u godini.

Then he went out into the garden and smelled the air.

Zatim je izašao u baštu i omirisao vazduh.

"Hm, I think it is the West Wind. It's warm today," he said.

„Hm, mislim da je to Zapadni vetar. Danas je toplo“, reče on.

"Did you hear what he said?" Michael took Jane's arm.

„Jesi li čula šta je rekao?“ Majkl uhvati Džejn pod ruku.

"It is the West Wind," she said slowly.

„To je Zapadni vetar“, reče ona polako.

They didn't say a word but they had the same thought.

Nisu rekli ni reč, ali su pomislili isto.

They forgot it soon, because everything was fine that morning.

Uskoro su to zaboravili, jer je tog jutra sve bilo lepo.

But trouble began after lunch.

Ali nevolje su počele posle ručka.

Jane was in the garden.

Džejn je bila u bašti.

Michael ran out of the house, very red in the face.

Majkl je istrčao iz kuće, veoma rumenog lica.

"Look, Jane, look!" he cried.

„Gledaj, Džejn, gledaj!“ povika.

In his hand he had Mary Poppins' compass.

U ruci je držao kompas Meri Popins.

"The compass?" said Jane.

„Kompas?“ reče Džejn.

Michael suddenly started crying.

Majkl iznenada poče da plače.

"She gave it to me. Oh, oh, there must be something wrong! What is going to happen? She has never given me anything before."

„Dala mi ga je. Oh, oh, nešto nije u redu! Šta će se desiti? Nikada mi ranije nije ništa dala.“

That afternoon Mary Poppins was very kind.

Tog popodneva Meri Popins je bila veoma ljubazna.

She was thinking about something.

O nečemu je razmišljala.

At last Michael asked her:

Najzad je Majkl upita:

"Oh, do be cross, Mary Poppins! Do be cross again! It is not like you."

„Oh, budi stroga, Meri Popins! Budi opet stroga! To nisi ti ovakva.“

"Trouble trouble and it will trouble you!" said Mary Poppins crossly, in her usual voice.

„Nevolju prizivaj i nevolja će te snaći!“ reče Meri Popins strogo, svojim uobičajenim glasom.

And the same moment he felt a little better.

I istog trena on se oseti malo bolje.

"Perhaps it's only a feeling," he said to Jane.

„Možda je samo osećaj“, reče Džejn.

"Perhaps," said Jane slowly.

„Možda“, reče Džejn polako.

The wind grew stronger and stronger.

Vetar je bivao sve jači i jači.

They could hear it everywhere inside the house: down the chimneys and near the windows, even in the Nursery.

Čuli su ga svuda u kući: niz dimnjake i kraj prozora, čak i u Dečjoj sobi.

Mary Poppins gave them their supper and took away the plates after it.

Meri Popins im je dala večeru i potom sklonila tanjire.

"There!" she said.

„Eto“, reče.

Then she put one hand on Michael's head and the other on Jane's shoulder.

"Now," she said, "I am just going off for a few minutes."

She went out and shut the door quietly behind her.

They wanted to run after her, but something stopped them.

Hteli su da potrče za njom, ali ih je nešto zadržalo.

They were waiting for her to come back.

Čekali su da se vrati.

"How silly we are," said Jane. "Everything's all right."

„Kako smo blesavi“, reče Džejn. „Sve je u redu.“

But she knew it was not true.

Ali je znala da to nije istina.

They still sat there at the table, waiting.

I dalje su sedeli za stolom, čekajući.

At last Michael said: "She's been gone a very long time, hasn't she?"

Najzad reče Majkl: „Dugo je nema, zar ne?“

But there was no answer.

Ali nije bilo odgovora.

Suddenly they heard somebody shut the front door.

Odjednom su čuli kako je neko zalupio ulazna vrata.

"Michael!" said Jane, jumping up.

„Majkle!“ reče Džejn, skočivši.

"Jane!" said Michael, with a white look on his face.

„Džejn!“ reče Majkl, bleđeg lica.

They ran quickly to the window and looked out.

Brzo su potrčali do prozora i pogledali napolje.

Down, stood Mary Poppins, dressed in her coat and hat, with her carpet bag in one hand and her umbrella in the other.

Dole je stajala Meri Popins, obučena u kaput i šešir, s torbom od ćilima u jednoj ruci i kišobranom u drugoj.

The wind was blowing wildly about her.

Vetar je divlje duvao oko nje.

She smiled at the wind and opened the umbrella.

Nasmješila se vetru i otvorila kišobran.

The wind got under the umbrella and lifted Mary Poppins from the ground.

Vetar je podvio pod kišobran i podigao Meri Popins sa zemlje.

Then it lifted her over the front gate and carried her over the cherry trees in the Lane.

Zatim ju je podigao preko kapije i preneo preko trešanja u Ulici.

"She's going, Jane, she's going!" cried Michael.

„Odlazi, Džejn, odlazi!“ povika Majkl.

Jane and Michael opened the window and cried: "Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins, come back!"

Džejn i Majkl otvoriše prozor i povikaše: „Meri Popins! Meri Popins, vrati se!“

But she did not hear them.

Ali nije ih čula.

She went up into the air.

Poletela je u vazduh.

At last she was over the hill and the children couldn't see her.

Najzad je bila preko brda i deca je više nisu mogla videti.

"I wonder if we'll ever see her again?" said Jane and started to take off her clothes because it was time to go to sleep.

„Pitam se hoćemo li je ikada više videti?“ reče Džejn i poče da se presvlači jer je bilo vreme za spavanje.

"What is this under my pillow?"

„Šta je ovo ispod mog jastuka?“

It was a small parcel there.

Tamo je bio mali zamotuljak.

When Jane opened it, she cried:

Kad ga je Džejn otvorila, uzviknula je:

"It's her picture," she said. And it was!

„Njena slika“, reče. I bila je!

Under it was written, "Mary Poppins by Bert."

Ispod je pisalo: „Meri Popins — Bert.“

Jane saw that there was a letter in the parcel too.

Džejn vide da je u paketu i pismo.

It said: "Dear Jane, Michael had the compass so the picture is for you. Au revoir. Mary Poppins."

U njemu je pisalo: „Draga Džejn, Majkl je dobio kompas pa je slika za tebe. Au revoir. Meri Popins.“

Jane didn't understand the last word, so she asked Michael: "What does 'Au revoir' mean in English?"

Džejn nije razumela poslednju reč, pa upita Majkla: „Šta znači ‘Au revoir’ na engleskom?“

"Au revoir? I think it means 'To Meet Again'."

„Au revoir? Mislim da znači ‘Do ponovnog viđenja’.“

Jane and Michael looked at each other.

Džejn i Majkl pogledaše jedno drugo.

Happiness shone in their eyes.

Radost je zasijala u njihovim očima.

They knew what Mary Poppins meant.

Znali su šta je Meri Popins mislila.

"That's all right," Michael said. "She always does what she says she will."

„Onda je sve u redu“, reče Majkl. „Ona uvek uradi ono što kaže da će uraditi.“
