CHAPTER SEVEN — The Bird Woman

— Možda je neće biti — reče Michael.

— Maybe she won’t be there — said Michael.

— Biće, biće — reče Jane. — Ona je uvek tamo.

— Yes, she will — said Jane. — She’s always there.

Mary Poppins i deca su išli ka Ženi sa pticama.

Mary Poppins and the children were on the way to the Bird Woman.

Mary Poppins je hodala između Jane i Michaela.

Mary Poppins walked between Jane and Michael.

Nosila je novi šešir i gledala u svaki izlog.

She had a new hat on and looked into every shop window.

Da li je šešir u redu?

Was the hat OK?

Zar se ružičaste ruže nisu pretvorile u bele rade?

Didn’t the pink roses turn into daisies?

Na kraju su stigli do katedrale Svetog Pavla.

At last they came to St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Izgrađena je davno, od strane čoveka sa ptičjim imenom — Sir Christopher Wren.

It was built a long time ago by a man with a bird’s name — Sir Christopher Wren.

Zato su mnoge ptice i Žena sa pticama živele blizu njegove katedrale.

That was why so many birds and the Bird Woman lived near his Cathedral.

— Eto je! — iznenada povika Michael.

— There she is! — cried Michael suddenly.

— Govori to! Govori to! — reče Jane.

— She’s saying it! She’s saying it! — cried Jane.

I zaista, govorila je.

And she was saying it.

— Hranite ptice, dva penija kesa! — govorila je iznova i iznova, visokim pevačkim glasom.

— Feed the birds, tuppence a bag! — she said it again and again in a high singing voice.

U rukama je držala mnogo malih kesa punih mrvica hleba.

In her hands the Bird Woman had a lot of little bags full of breadcrumbs.

Prodavala ih je.

She was selling them.

Oko nje je bilo mnogo ptica.

There were many birds around her.

Letjele su, hodale, ili jele nešto.

They were flying or walking or eating something.

Mary Poppins ih nije volela.

Mary Poppins didn’t like them.

Uvek ih je zvala „vrapcima“.

She always called them “sparrows.”

Ali to nisu bili vrapci, nego golubovi.

But they were not sparrows, they were pigeons.

Bilo je sivih golubova kao bake…

There were grey pigeons like Grandmothers…

…i braon golubova kao ujaci…

…and brown pigeons like Uncles…

…i sivozelenih, bučnih golubova kao očevi.

…and grey-green, noisy pigeons like Fathers.

A glupi, nežno plavi golubovi bili su kao majke.

And the silly soft blue pigeons were like Mothers.

Tako su ih Jane i Michael zamišljali.

That’s what Jane and Michael thought about them.

Leteli su oko glave Žene sa pticama,

They flew round and round the head of the Bird Woman,

a kada su deca prišla,

and when the children came up to her,

odjednom su odleteli i seli na vrh katedrale Svetog Pavla, smejući se i gledajući dole.

they suddenly flew away and sat on the top of St. Paul’s, laughing and looking down.

Bio je Michaelov red da kupi kesu.

It was Michael’s turn to buy a bag.

Jane je kupila jednu dan ranije.

Jane bought one the day before.

Prišao je Ženi sa pticama i dao joj novac.

He came up to the Bird Woman and gave her money.

— Hranite ptice, dva penija kesa! — reče ona i stavi kesu mrvica u njegovu ruku.

— Feed the birds, tuppence a bag! — said the Bird Woman, and she put a bag of crumbs into his hand.

Michael je znao da je beskorisno postavljati joj pitanja.

Michael knew it was no good asking her any questions.

On i Jane su često pokušavali,

He and Jane often tried,

ali ona bi uvek odgovorila: „Hranite ptice, dva penija kesa!“ i ništa više.

but she always said, “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag!” and nothing more.

Baš kao što kukavica može da kaže samo „Kukuvija“, ma šta da je pitate.

Just as a cuckoo can only say “Cuckoo,” no matter what questions you ask it.

Jane, Michael i Mary Poppins prosuli su mrvice u krug na zemlji,

Jane and Michael and Mary Poppins spread the crumbs in a circle on the ground,

i jedna po jedna, ptice su silazile sa katedrale.

and one by one, the birds came down from St. Paul’s.

Golubovi su jeli mrvice i pravili veliku buku.

The birds were eating the crumbs and making a great noise.

Nisu ostavili nijednu mrvicu,

They left no crumbs on the ground,

jer nije pristojno za goluba da ostavi nešto na tanjiru.

because it is not polite for a pigeon to leave anything on the plate.

Kada je obrok bio gotov,

When the meal was finished,

ptice su poletele i počele da kruže oko glave Žene sa pticama.

the birds flew up and went flying round and round the Bird Woman’s head.

Jedna je sela na njen šešir, izgledajući kao ukras na njemu.

One of them sat on her hat and looked like a hat decoration.

A jedna je sela na šešir Mary Poppins i otkinula cvet.

And one bird sat on Mary Poppins’s hat and took a flower off it.

Mary Poppins se veoma naljutila i prodrmala kišobranom:

Mary Poppins got very angry and shook an umbrella at the bird:

— Staviću te u pitu! — reče Mary Poppins.

— I’ll put you in a pie! — said Mary Poppins.

Zatim pozva Jane i Michaela.

Then she called to Jane and Michael.

— Vreme je da idemo — reče.

— It is time to go — she said.

— Doviđenja — rekoše Jane i Michael Ženisa pticama.

— Good-bye — said Jane and Michael to the Bird Woman.

— Hranite ptice — odgovorila je ona sa osmehom.

— Feed the birds — she replied, smiling.

Krenuli su, dok je Mary Poppins hodala između njih.

They left her, walking with Mary Poppins between them.

— Šta se dešava kad svi odu? — upita Michael Jane.

— What happens when everybody goes away? — said Michael to Jane.

Dobro je znao šta se dešava,

He knew well what happened,

ali je pitao Jane zato što je to bila njena priča.

but asked Jane because it was her story.

— Noću, kada svi odu na spavanje — počela je Jane — sve ptice siđu sa vrha katedrale Svetog Pavla

— At night when everybody goes to bed — began Jane — all the birds come down from the top of St. Paul’s

i pažljivo hodaju po zemlji, samo da vide da li je ostala neka mrvica.

and run very carefully all over the ground just to see there are no crumbs left.

— A kad... —

— And when —

— Zaboravila si kupanje.

— You’ve forgotten the baths.

— Ah, da — okupaju se i očiste svoja krila.

— Oh, yes — they have a bath and clean their wings.

I kada tri puta oblete oko glave Žene sa pticama,

And when they fly three times round the head of the Bird Woman,

— Da li joj sednu na ramena?

— Do they sit on her shoulders?

— Da, i na šešir.

— Yes, and on her hat.

A neki i na koleno.

And some on her knee.

Tada ih ona pogleda, osmehne se i kaže im da budu dobre ptice.

Then she looks at them and smiles at them and tells them to be good birds.

— Na ptičjem jeziku?

— In the bird language?

— Da. I kad svi postanu pospani i vreme je za spavanje,

— Yes. And when they are all sleepy and it is time to go to sleep,

ona raširi svoje suknje, kao što kokoška raširi svoja krila,

she spreads out her skirts, as a mother hen spreads out her wings,

i ptice uđu ispod suknji i tamo spavaju do jutra.

and the birds go under the skirts and they sleep there till morning.

Michael je radosno pogledao svoju sestru.

Michael looked at his sister happily.

Voleo je tu priču i nikada mu nije dosadila.

He loved the story and was never tired of hearing it.

— I sve je to istina, zar ne? — upita, baš kao što je uvek pitao.

— And it’s all true, isn’t it? — he said, just as he always did.

— Ne — reče Mary Poppins, koja je uvek govorila „Ne“.

— No — said Mary Poppins, who always said “No.”

— Da — reče Jane, koja je uvek sve znala.

— Yes — said Jane, who always knew everything.
