Topic:

In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Essay:

People eat a lot of fast food because they have little time and money, or because it is convenient for them to chat over fast food in an inexpensive restaurant. I disagree that the government should restrict street food by raising taxes. Rather, food producers and consumers themselves have to monitor food quality and quantity.

First, fast food can lead to health problems or obesity if people eat fast food every day. In this case, diseases can appear due to a large amount of fat and a lack of vitamins. The government cannot influence people's eating behaviour, they can do it themselves. For example, a more active lifestyle and more vegetables in fast food would neutralize the bad effect.

Second, fast food can be acceptable if the quality of products and the way of making fast food is being improved. In this sense, the government could influence the quality of food through expert reviews. Taxes are not the only instrument of government. For example, government programs might be enacted to encourage healthy food production. Moreover, in some countries, like Italy, for example, street food like pizza, arancini, panini is part of the national culture, which has an important spiritual meaning, since this food could be shared with others, as a sign of unity, and gets prepared out of the best products according to special recipes for centuries.

In balance, I understand that some people inclined to believe in benefit of government maintaining the strict measures toward any risky situation through tax or fines. In fact, it can lead to limitations, which are not directly connected to a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, I would rather disagree that taxes are related to the regulation of health and quality of fast food. Eating behaviour is related to the culture of the population, the quality of nutrition and communication. And in this sense, the government can help solve the problem by educating the public, promoting healthy trends and peer reviews of the quality of street food.
